21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox

21 Pounds in 21 Days: The Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox

Detox diets are making news as the quickest, easiest way to shed pounds, boost your energy, and get yourself on a wellness track. Popular in the 1970s, cleansing fasts are again all the rage among celebrities like Gisele Bundchen, Gwyneth Paltrow, Stella McCartney, and Madonna.

One of the key advocates of the health benefits of cleansing detoxes is Roni DeLuz, ND, a licensed naturopathic and health practitioner at Martha′s Vineyard Holistic Retreat, part of the renowned Martha′s Vineyard Inn. The idea behind DeLuz′s new detox plan is the belief that the foods we eat (along with the coffee, tea, and alcohol we drink and the air we breathe) contain harmful and toxic substances that accumulate in our bodies and need to be removed in some way. In 21 Pounds in 21 Days, DeLuz offers three different detox programs, including the original and most effective 21-day “MasterFast,” which promises a 21-pound weight loss in just three weeks and focuses on detoxification through antioxidants, fasting, stress reduction, and lifestyle changes. Also included in the book are:

∗maintenance plans

∗dozens of easy, delicious recipes

∗real-life tips

∗an extensive glossary of terms

∗a guide to supplements

Meals consist of supplement-laden drinks, herbal teas, thick, delicious vegetable purees, and “live” juices, along with nutritional supplements, vitamins, and enzymes designed to keep the body′s systems stable and its cells nourished while harmful toxins are flushed out. 21 Pounds in 21 Days isn′t just for those looking to lose weight; everyone can benefit from this revolutionary detox diet that results in a clean, refreshed system that functions at its best.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Why did I buy this book?
I haven’t even read it. Dang it! I can see how this might actually work. The book arrived in a timely manner and in good condition. It is a hardcover book and the text is a nice font. I guess I can’t really review the content unless I read it!

5 Stars i wish martha’s vineyard was in israel!

4 Stars This works people!
Today is my 12th day of the 21 day plan - 9 more to go…. I am down 17#’s so far. I read almost all the reviews before I started this. I came to the conclusion that the negative and stupid comments came from those that had either not read the book or don’t care about or understand nutrition and/or detoxification. Then there are those of us that DO get it and bravely dove into this program. I have to say - this is not an easy program people. It’s tough - very tough. The first 3 days I thought I was starving to death and the green vegetable juicing drinks are downright vile. I actually did a protein shake on the 4th day made with aloe juice which gave me the boost of energy I needed. I was also doing this program with another person, so, we encouraged each other thru those really tough first few days. (Strongly recommended!) There is alot of “Green” emphasized in this plan. Since I had tried the “green” mix in water before and knew I couldn’t gag it down, I bought my Super Food green tablets thru Dr. Richard Schultze’s site - MUCH easier and just as beneficial as gagging down that vile crap you juice! Honestly, it looks like you scooped up algae from the sea and put it in a cup, pureed it and now had to drink it! That being said - I did try to find as many palatable organic vegetables to juice that would taste okay and plowed thru. For the soups, using tomato based recipes, Braggs amino acids and other herbs have made the soups tolerable. I honestly live for my acai berry drinks twice a day!! I’ve also given in to adding an apple and a lemon to my green juices. After my wheatgrass experience, I just can’t tolerate the green juicing without it. I know fruit (except for super antioxidant berries) isn’t supposed to be on the plan, but, so far, I’m still losing. Let me expand on the wheatgrass. In the book, she talks about some people’s reaction to wheatgraas is projectile vomiting. Well, I wasn’t far from it! nasty stuff - it was actually what threw me over the edge on being able to tolerate the vegetable juicing without fruit now. You must drink lots of herbal teas. Make sure you get a huge variety of tea! I have found the licorace root teas are almost desert like! You drink tea all day - I think I now have about 10 varieties. You easily get bored with just a few. I’ve also been scouring the internet for palatable juicing recipes. She does have one recipe in her book for Asian Spinich soup. It’s actually good and the broth is even better. You feel like you’re eating, or drinking, real stuff again. So, the juicing and food being said, I think you get how hard this is and I am trying to prepare you for the worst part of this program. KEEP IN MIND, this is only 21 days of your life though. You will get thru it. As for the benefits? So far, I am extremely pleased with the weight loss. My skin has never felt so soft and creamy. I have never slept so good. I feel much more alert, no more bloating, clothes are fitting better too. The only exercise I do is walking my dogs or doing 15 minutes on my eliptical, maybe some stretching exercises or yoga and 5 minutes on a rebounder. You must do the colon cleanse and a colonic is highly recommended. I’ve also done the lymph drainage massage - awesome! I’ve done the detox bath - very relaxing. You do experience what’s called “healing crisis” though. It can be headaches, skin break-outs, rashes, joint pain, etc. My experience was my back. On the 8th day my back felt like it was going to break in two! I had done nothing to aggravate my back either!! This went on until Wednesday. I had increased my “cleanse” tablets and during one of my cleansing moments, my back suddenly felt 100% better. LOL Now that was weird. I still have 9 more days to go and just take this two hours at a time, getting thru this. The experience definitely makes you realize just how much “grazing” you do thru the day and night! I will definitely rethink my way of eating and what I put in my mouth from now on. I feel so much cleaner. I like the feeling in my stomach now (when not hungry). Do I miss my chocolate, pasta, artisan breads and cheese? YOU BETCHA! It’s ALL I think about! And I will incorporate those things back in my diet, only in moderation from now on. I don’t want to have that stuffed, clothes too tight, feeling ever again from the heavy foods I used to eat. I’m actually going right into the Gillian McKeith plan. She’s the chick from BBCA that has the show “You Are What You Eat”. Her Slim For Life book has a full 28 day plan, from breakfast thru night time snack, and 90% of it looks very very appetizing!” That should keep me on track to a better way of eating and losing this weight. I will do this again - maybe not the 21 day program, but, defintiely can do a week again. This book gives you some great insight to cleansing, detoxing and weight loss. However, I leaned much more from other nutritionists and herbalists than what this book tells you. Educate yourself - this books seriously lacks juicing recipes and soup ideas. I feel that any kind of organic vegetable and fruit detox you can do, and for as long as you can do it, will only benefit your body. We live in a very toxic world people. Again - educate yourselves and feed yourself and your babies with the best food you can. When you or your loved one are stricken with cancer, you will have to question if you did everything you could to keep this from happening. Be safe and happy detoxing!

4 Stars Seems promising

4 Stars The Real Deal review
Okay–so I bought this book despite a mixed bag of reviews. My rating is more based on the program IN the book rather the the book itself. The verdict: it’s an effective cleanse. I followed it for about 17 days and lost 16 lbs very easily.

I must say that the people who’ve reviewed this book and are complaining that the cleanse is hard make are rather comical. I’m inclined to think that a good number of those people are probably the lazy types who are used to instant gratification and magic. Of course it’s hard! If it wasn’t, would any of us need it in the first place??

That said, the book is a very easy read. I read it in less than a week, and a good majority of it was testimonials. Once you get through that part, the author discusses the effects of toxins in the body and how it works. Beyond that, there are details about the program. I did have a few gripes about the details of the program, as there were a few things that were unclear. For example, there was a big section listing several vegetables and their benefits (presumably to give you an idea of which veggies you might choose to “juice”.) But just a few pages later, she gives a shopping list of specific veggies to buy. It’s not clear if that was a suggestion or if it was law. So a few things were left up to interpretation. I had to guess a lot, but I got it right.

AS for the many other things she suggested doing, like colonics and enemas–I didn’t do ANY of them. Too expensive. I did do the minimal 20 minutes of exercise (walking) and I would guess that this made all the difference in the world. (I actually still walk, and am maintaining my weight because of it.)

Bottom line:

- Must procure a juicer (or drink that VeggieSplash stuff)

- Contrary to other reviews i read, I was NOT starving or even hungry if I stayed on plan with waters and teas (although I did miss chewing)

- I did cheat with a small meal once, and I got REALLY sick just as she said I would (don’t do it!)

- you don’t need to buy the supplements from the website, but mine cost me around $100 in total. Know that in advance.

If anyone has any other questions about my experience, feel free to comment back.
